Artists From Xingolati 2005:

The Flaming Lips
The Flaming Lips formed in Oklahoma City in 1983, when founder and guitarist Wayne Coyne allegedly stole a collection of musical instruments from an area church hall and enlisted his vocalist brother Mark and bassist Michael Ivins to start a band. Giving themselves the nonsensical name the Flaming Lips (its origin variously attributed to a porn film, an obscure drug reference, or a dream in which a fiery Virgin Mary plants a kiss on Wayne in the backseat of his car), the band made its live debut at a local transvestite club. After progressing through an endless string of drummers, they recruited percussionist Richard English prior to recording their self-titled debut, issued on green vinyl on their own Lovely Sorts of Death label in 1985.

G. Love and Special Sauce
G. Love’s new release The Hustle is an invitation to spend long days lounging on the front porch listening to songs about love, life and lemonade. Garrett Dutton - a.k.a G. Love - has reenlisted Special Sauce, James "Jimi Jazz" Prescott on upright bass, and Jeffrey "The Houseman" Clemens on drums to complete the Philadelphonic Sound. G. Love and Special Sauce take their cues from many musicians including John Lee Hooker, Bob Dylan and De La Soul. The Hustle is a reflection of G’s past three years including everything from starting a family, being a father, losing a girl, and hustling a new deal. "For the first time, I’m not singing about the world as I’d like it to be," says G. Love, "I’m singing about the way it is."

Banyan
Led by drummer Stephen Perkins of the legendary groups Janes Addiction and Porno for Pyros, Banyan is an alternative-rock supergroup featuring Tony Franklin (The Firm, Jimmy Page), Brian Jordan (Karl Denson s Tiny Universe) and Willie Waldman (Snoop Dog, Tupac). Banyan has an anything-goes aesthetic that touches on elements of jazz, funk, rock, world music. For Perkins, playing in the moment is one of the things that led him to form Banyan, a side project that employs a rotating lineup of stellar musicians including Flea, Nels Cline, Mike Watt, Buckethead, Rob Wasserman, Charlie Hitchcock, among others.

Medeski Martin & Wood
By the time most popular bands approach making their tenth album, breaking boundaries is not easy. What's left to do? A set of standards? Duets? The ubiquitous Greatest Hits featuring two new songs? For improvisational trio Medeski Martin & Wood, this was not the challenge; thirteen years of creating music live together, on the spot, has ensured they rarely want for fresh ideas. No, what MMW sought for their latest, the sublime End Of The World Party (just in case), was a means of taking their ideas to the next level.

Slightly Stoopid
Fusing acoustic rock and blues with reggae, hip-hop, and punk, Slightly Stoopid have cemented a signature sound and created a legion of die-hard fans in the process. The band, whose D.I.Y. nature has seen them thumb their nose at more than a few major label record deals over the course of their career, will release Closer to the Sun on their own imprint, Stoopid Records/Caliplates Recordings, in conjunction with Reincarnate/BMG. As Miles Doughty, one of the group's two front men explains, "It's all about the grass roots style - you've got to tough it out, got to get your hands dirty touring and making music. We have 100% creative control of what we do, and we've worked way too hard to have other people telling us how to do it. It's working, so we don't feel we need to change."

Particle
There are very few times when the stars align to create something magical, mystical, and charged with unparalleled energy. Since forming in the fall of 2000, Particle has enjoyed a transcendental rise on the national music scene. The instrumental quartet’s trademark ‘funktronic’ sounds combine elements of electronica, funk, and good ol’ rock and roll. Particle’s momentum has been unprecedented since their introduction to the live music world nearly four years ago. With the release of their debut studio record Launchpad, the band is poised to reach new heights.

R.E.D
R.E.D. is a project that was born a year ago from free form jams when Rob Wasserman opened for Particle as a solo act. While on tour, Eric Gould (Particle) and Darren (Pujalet (also from Particle) sat in with him almost nightly. With improvisation at its core, R.E.D original "Clifford the Big Red Dog" opened a creative and varied set. The songs reached into the pockets of many friends, as a plethora of guests made their voices heard. Some were funk oriented, others more of an intersection of ideas where each party took control of the conversation for a bit, and then let the other choose the direction it was going.

DJ Greyboy
Over the years Greyboy has DJ'd in Japan, Europe, and across the USA. His largest DJ gig was to 5000 people in the countryside outside of Rome, but throughout the summer of 2003 he played to over 20,000 people a night on tour with Ben Harper and Jack Johnson. His DJ philosophies have never changed, he practices to stay technically on top of his game but never practices a set for a specific night preferring to put together tunes and based on the vibe at each gig.

The Mutaytor
The first durable chunk of American music to emerge from the Burning Man subculture, the Mutaytor consists of the first act in the history of showbiz that turns the audience into itself. Backed by keyboards, electric bass, samples and the monstrous rattle ‘n whomp of up to fifty drums, a procession of fire-spinners, dancers, cartoon characters, escape, voltage and hula-hoop artistes play catch-and-release with everyone nearby. Spontaneously self-generated, endlessly self-renewing, the Mutaytor is both Mickey Mouse club for the Great American Freak and a revolutionary force as expansive and relentless as a Borg Pepperland. Modular and adaptable, they rock as hard and funk as nasty with ten members as thirty, in sopping venue heat and evil desert cold.

For the last decade, Lorin Ashton has helped develop the North American underground dance music scene. From touring full time as a DJ (an average of 125 shows per year), to his production & remixing under the alias Bassnectar, he has ammassed a dedicated fan base, crossing over from hip hop to electronica to breakbeat to ragga/dub to the jam band scene and the greater Burningman Scene.

DJ Laird
DJ Laird grew up near Chicago, immersed in the vibe of the original house music scene during the late '80's, buying records and DJing numerous warehouse and renegade parties. A classically trained pianist of a dozen years, Laird moved to San Francisco in 1990 and immediately became involved in the explosion of the West Coast rave scene. Since then he has played in almost every nightclub on the West Coast, and for numerous warehouse parties and special events across the United States and throughout Europe. From Burning Man to MOMA, Coachella to the Black and White Ball, Laird is renowned for his rocking funky house and psychedelic breakbeat sessions, as well as his ability to choose the perfect music for the occasion.

Rob Cantrell from NBC’s Last Comic Standing
Rob Cantrell is one of the most original and electric performers of our time!!!...at least that is what he tells himself when he has to write a new cheesy Bio. Rob's stand up is fearless, truthful and always hilarious. In O3, Cantrell made his national television debut as a finalist on the first season of NBC's prime-time hit show The Last Comic Standing. Rob was selected out of THOUSANDS of stand up comics to live In The House and compete for a NBC development deal. Although he did not win, he went far and was praised by critics and comics alike. The SF Chronicle describes Rob as "One funny man, the cream of the crop".
